Mindful incorporation of AI into the educational space can help teachers and students learn about its capabilities and limitations.

While the goals and motivations of pedagogy are firmly established, the tools and techniques available to accomplish these goals continue to evolve. Although not the newest, AI (artificial intelligence) has certainly garnered extensive attention recently, with teachers and students questioning its place in education and how it may influence the future of pedagogy. In this piece, we have gathered insights on the use of AI in education from educators from a diversity of fields within the Woodruff Health Sciences Center. We asked them how they use AI in education and their thoughts on some of the most pressing issues that need to be addressed as AI becomes a more common part of the educational landscape.

The diversity of AI uses is revealed in the following vignettes, with some educators choosing to integrate AI into the traditional classroom to enhance student learning, or applying AI to train clinicians to interview patients, while others are teaching their students to use AI in the research setting to integrate large datasets and determine risk factors for certain health outcomes. No matter the application of AI, the message that is repeatedly shared is the critical need to train students to think critically about AI –to understand its utility and its limitations– so that students can make informed and responsible decisions about their AI use.
