Editor’s Corner: October 2023

Time, as they say, certainly does fly! It has been five months since Intersections’ launch, and our editorial team has made great strides in firming up our processes and procedures. We are pleased to see more submissions starting to come in and gratified with the range of authors they represent, including experienced academicians and novice scholars from the breadth of professions, educational sites, and learner groups encompassed by the health sciences center. We are also happy to welcome Michaela McMillian Jenkins to our team as Editorial Assistant.

Over the past year, we have learned many lessons, both great and small. To be honest, these are the same lessons that educators learn over and over again while developing new learning experiences and programs, regardless of setting. First and foremost, we’ve developed a strong structure that can support something new. We have had unwavering support from the Woodruff Health Sciences Center and our cross-WHSC Advisory Board, both of which stand ready to assist us as needed. This support is critical as we navigate the process of establishing something entirely new for the institution.

Second, we’ve learned that teamwork is everything. We identified a talented and enthusiastic editorial staff as well as a skilled editorial assistant, and we have been working on our team processes and relationships to make our workflow as smooth as possible. As always, teams require constant attention, especially teams of educators whose “day jobs” are already busy with important work and responsibilities. While virtual meetings make scheduling easier, it’s hard to form the strong personal ties that help a new group coalesce. We look forward to our upcoming in-person editorial team retreat to get to know each other better and workshop some new and exciting ideas.

And last, we’ve seen that when starting something new, it takes diligence to build it into the fabric of the existing landscape. We hope that you, our readers and contributors, will tell your colleagues about Intersections, and encourage them to subscribe, submit their work, and become reviewers. We are committed to supporting all WHSC educators in their academic careers, and we will work with authors and reviewers to hone their skills as they work with us. To keep up with our changes until our next Editor’s Corner, follow us on Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter/X.

Thank you for your support!
